Christmas traditions in southern Italy have a lot of similarities with celebrations in other Catholic European countries. Christmas is an important family celebration.
On Christmas Eve many families attend midnight mass or vespers that are held on that day instead of before or after. A popular tradition during these religious services is to light candles.
For those traveling to Italy during this time, it can be an exciting opportunity to see all the family-based Christmas traditions of the country!
I have put together this list of tips to help you make the most out of Christmas in Italy this year!
An Origin Story:-
The word Christmas originated from the Latin word Natalis Solis Invicti which means "Birth of the unconquered Sun" and was first used in 336 by Roman Emperor Constantine I to celebrate the feast of the birth of Jesus Christ. While Christmas originated in Northern Europe, countries such as Italy also have their own traditions and food which were derived from those places as well as other sources such as the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church.
Christmas Eve in Italy is the day when the biggest meal of the year is prepared:
In Italy, Christmas Eve means good food, time spent with family, gifts, and more food! There is a traditional fish-based (no meat or dairy) meal on the eve of Christmas (il Virgilio di Natale).
This is a typical ritual on the night before many religious celebrations; you are supposed to ‘eat lean’ and purify your body in preparation for the holidays!
The types of fish and how they are served varies between different regions in Italy. Common types of fish eaten on Christmas Eve include baccara (salted cod), vongole (clams), calamari (squid), sardine (sardines), and anguilla (eels).
Typically after this light seafood meal is eaten, people go to Midnight Mass.
December 25th is just another occasion to spend time with family, sitting around the table — almost all day long — and enjoy a delicious and exquisite menu. This is an all-day event and usually lasts until late, while playing board games, card games, eating typical Italian dolci (pastries and sweets) drinking good wine, limoncello or grappa (liquors), and unwrapping all the presents!
It can be said that Italians like simplicity and focus on food! Therefore, if you visit Italy around Christmas time keep an eye out for these Italian traditions!
Babbo Natale (Santa Claus) visits many homes in Italy but he is never given a plate of cookies or milk— Instead, people will set out some wine and sugar cubes with a glass for him to drink. Lucky Santa!
Around the table: On Christmas Day, families get together to share an extravagant and richly prepared lunch. (Usually consisting of different pasta dishes and meats).
If they do not spend it all together, they exchange gifts after lunch on December 26. Santo Stefano (Holy Stephen) is an extra day off work after Christmas for most workers throughout Italy who celebrate Labor Day on January 1st.
Naming an Elderly Family Member: Families in Italy call an elderly family member living at home Nonna which means grandmother. When talking about her they add “dei mille anni”, which translates to “of a thousand years.”
(This refers to how long she has been alive. On Christmas Eve families gather around their nonna \”di mille anni\” who sits by a decorated tree with all her grandchildren sitting by her side while opening gifts from Santa Claus.)
It is a beautiful tradition highlighting longevity and welcoming new beginnings.
Live Nativity scenes: Another tradition during Christmas is to set up presepi, which are Nativity scenes with live animals included depicting Christ’s birth. This tradition may stem from medieval times when many people could not read so they needed these representations to learn about their religion.
Christmas in Italy is considered a festival of light and happiness since it does not fall within any religious celebration. Also, a lot of streets and bridges get lit up in Rome, giving us a magical feeling under starry skies.
Soak up everything Italy has to offer and savor each moment!
The biggest difference in Italian traditions from those in other countries is that Santa Claus is not as well known as he is abroad. Rather, it is La Befana who flies through chimneys on Christmas Eve to fill children’s stockings with presents. She is a witch-like figure from Roman times who now rides a broomstick and wears a long red cape. While she may sound quite scary, she is a fun part of Italian culture.
But to think of her as nothing more than a substitute for Santa Claus would be wrong – there are many differences between how Italians celebrate and what they eat during the holidays versus other countries. Let us take a look at some holiday favorites!
It is not all about presents. Rather than giving gifts, many Italian families send each other little cards called cartoline or biglietti—literally translated as postcards. As soon as Christmas hits, there is a rush to find that special card that will just capture what you mean to your loved ones. Unlike North American culture, it is not uncommon for children to go into debt on their credit cards buying lavish gifts for their parents. Why? Because they are expected to show gratitude for everything they have received through hard work by gifting something in return.
Sounds good to me!
One of my favorite features of Italian culture is that many religious festivals are accompanied by delicious traditional foods. There are many unique foods eaten during the holiday season in Italy. However, certain foods vary by region because every region has its own specialties.
Some examples –
In Venice it is traditional to eat tortelli di zucca (mashed pumpkin dumplings) during Christmas time.
Another special treat includes torrone di mandorla (nougat made with almonds instead of hazelnuts). Panforte, or dry fruit cake sweetened with honey also becomes very popular come December time.
A classic Christmas meal might include Baccalà al Gratin, which is cod that has been baked in tomato sauce until tender and golden brown on top.
A side dish would be Bruschetta con Tartufo Nero, which is bruschetta topped with black truffles from Alba. Nowadays it has been replaced by porcini mushrooms because they’re cheaper and more abundant here in Italy.
One of the most popular desserts is panettone, which is similar to a fruitcake with candied dried fruit. There are even entire stores dedicated just to selling it every year around Christmastime.
Other typical Christmas foods include Wreath Cookies (Italian wreaths dipped in chocolate), Bûche de Noël (chocolate log cakes), bollito misto (mixed boiled meats), pandoro cake (golden cake), and millefoglie cake (thousand leaves cake).
If you want to enjoy something truly authentic do not miss putting baccalà mantecato on your list of things to eat qduring your trip! It is a classic snack enjoyed throughout Southern Italy (even in Rome).
It consists of salt cod spread onto slices of bread, drizzled with olive oil, and topped off with onions chopped into little pieces as well as capers that have been mixed into a sauce-like texture before being added onto your sandwich.
This dish sounds bizarre but actually tastes amazing! It’s creamy and salty and super filling – perfect for winter days!
Traditionally, family, amici ( friends), and vicini (neighbors) gather on Christmas Day for a festive meal of polpette (meatballs), sausage, and fish. Be sure to follow that Italian lead and fill your house with those scents of simmering tomato sauce on Christmas morning.
A handful of dried pasta tossed with olive oil makes a quick and easy treat for young children and adults alike. These traditional pasta dishes such as spaghetti al pomodoro, or tomato sauce with some seafood such as shrimp, mussels, or calamari thrown in is sure to please those taste buds.
Hearty soups also make appearances at dinner tables during Christmastime; chestnut soup, tripe soup (made out of stomach lining), and fish soups like cioppino (seafood soup) should not be missed! They are so worth tasting!
Some other honorable mentions are amaretti cookies and baci di dama chocolate balls. (These treats are sold everywhere during Christmas but make sure to taste them while they’re still freshly made!)
Another delicious thing to try is Prosecco wine from Trentino Alto Adige. Enjoying a glass of the bubbly while opening presents make a very happy holiday time indeed!
Italian Sugar Cookies: This type of cookie is traditionally shaped like stars or other figures and then topped with icing after baking. Their main ingredient sugar gives them their sweetness but because sugar alone would burn easily, it has been mixed with butter which adds fat/oil content along with other flavors such as vanilla extract or almond extract. Other ingredients include eggs, flour, milk, and a leavening agent such as baking powder since sugar cookies typically don’t rise much due to being flat-bottomed shapes. These cookies were brought over from Italy in 1718 when they were known as Zucchero e Pepe (sugar and pepper). They became popular in New England in 1917 during World War I because of limited flour supplies.

Events and gatherings are usually organized in most areas of Italy. People visit family, exchange gifts, sing carols, eat traditional foods and watch Italian Nativity plays. It’s an important time for both children and adults alike to get away from work or school for a little while and enjoy each other’s company.

At Christmas time, you will find many people dressed up in local folk costumes called Traditions that entertain crowds at special events during December. Some of these characters will perform their songs and dances for you just for fun. These include people dressed as shepherds (bernacchi), kings (cavallieri or magi), Wise Men (Befani or Befanini), and various kinds of monsters with gifts for children who misbehave!

\n
\n
Midnight Mass: Celebrated on Christmas Eve; it takes place at midnight (hence its name)
\n

\n
\n
Epiphany : Following the New Year, Italians celebrate Epiphany on January 6th (also known as Little Christmas). This Christian celebration commemorates Jesus Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist and his later manifestation to Magi Kings who were guided by a star.
\n
\n
Small statues known as Befana are put near Italian homes’ chimneys during Epiphany…figures that look like an elderly woman dressed in black and carrying presents. Italians believe the Befana descends down chimneys delivering presents to good children but leaves lumps of coal or ash behind for naughty ones.
